How to Build a Skincare Routine That Actually Works

It all begins with an idea.

Skincare can be overwhelming. With so many products and conflicting advice online, it’s easy to feel stuck. But as an esthetician (and a mom!), I’m here to help you simplify things.

You don’t need a 10-step routine. You just need the right steps, the right products—and a little consistency. Let’s build a skincare routine that actually works for you.

Step 1: Know Your Skin Type

Before you do anything else, determine your skin type:

  • Oily

  • Dry

  • Combination

  • Normal

  • Sensitive

Step 2: Understand AM vs. PM Skincare

  • Morning Routine: Cleanse, protect, hydrate, SPF

  • Evening Routine: Cleanse, treat, repair, nourish

Each time of day has different goals, and using the right products helps you get the most out of your routine.

Step 3: The 4 Core Products Everyone Needs

Start simple. You only need these four to see results:

  1. Cleanser

  2. Serum

  3. Moisturizer

  4. Sunscreen (AM only)

Step 4: Customize for Your Skin Goals

Once your basics are down, you can add:

  • Vitamin C (AM) for brightness

  • Retinol (PM) for acne/aging

  • Exfoliants 2–3x/week

  • Eye creams or spot treatments

💡 Pro tip: Add one new product at a time so you know what’s working.

Step 5: Be Consistent

No routine works if you don’t stick to it. Make it part of your daily rhythm—morning coffee, kids’ bedtime, whatever works for you.

Even a 2-minute routine can change your skin when done consistently.

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
